THE ACTION OF THE PLAY COVERS A PERIOD FROM THE EARLY TWENTIES TO THE EARLY THIRTIES AND TAKES PLACE IN VARIOUS CITIES THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY.

ACT I, SCENE ONE:  THE STAGE OF A CHEAP THEATRE

The Mothers:         Tacky early 20’s dresses, hats and bags, some with coats

Balloon Girl:          Child’s tinselly costume with balloon motif

The Children:         Various dancing school versions of costumes

Baby June:             Theatrical Dutch Girl costume

Baby Louise:         Theatrical Dutch Boy costume

Rose:                     Loud coat and hat, bag, loud early 20’s dress

Uncle Jocko:          The impresario of the Kiddie show.  Loud knickers and

ACT I, SCENE TWO:  THE KITCHEN IN SEATTLE

Rose:                     Repeat I-1, remove coat and hat

Baby June:             Enters in coat, removes to I-1 costume

Baby Louise:         Enters in coat, removes to I-1 costume

Pop:                       Rumpled pants, neckband shirt, cardigan sweater

ACT I, SCENE THREE:  A ROAD

Rich Man:              Elegant period suit, hat

Baby June:             Overdressed gaudy child’s theatrical costume with large

hairbow.  Quick change to short tap version of Statue

Of Liberty costume with headpiece.

The three boys:      Theatrical newsboy costumes.  Quick change to Army,

Navy and Marine uniforms in white with red, white and

blue accents.

ACT I, SCENE 8:  THE STAGE OF GRANTZIGER’S PALACE THEATRE, NEW YORK

Miss Cratchitt:      Tailored 30’s dress, simple and attractive

Rose:                     Loud 30’s dress, coat and hat

June:                      Short spangled farmerette dress and bonnet. Quick

change to dainty little girl dress with hairbow.

Louise:                   Plays front of cow.  Underdressed in sweat shirt and

pants.

Herbie:                   Another neat suit

The Boys:              Theatrical farmer costumes.  Quick change to Eton suits

and top hats

The cow is a pretty, theatrical two-person cow with a detachable head.

ACT I, SCENE 9:  MR. GRANTZIGER’S OFFICE

Miss Crachitt:        Repeat

Louise:                   Repeat sweat shirt and pants

ACT I, SCENE 10:  A THEATRE ALLEY, BUFFALO

ACT I, SCENE 11:  THE RAILROAD TERMINAL, OMAHA

Louise:                   Slacks, shirt, short jacket, hat

Herbie:                   Add trench coat and hat over a previous suit

Act II, SCENE ONE:  ON THE ROAD, TEXAS

Rose:                     Summer dress or blouse and skirt

Louise:                   Gaudy, cheap toreador costume, hat.  Quick change (underdressed) to boy’s pajamas

The Girls:              Homemade looking Spanish senorita costumes with mantillas. Spanish shawls reversible to the Stars and Stripes: 3 with stripes, 1 with stars and stripes

Herbie:                   Repeat a suit

ACT II, SCENE TWO:  A BURLESQUE HOUSE, BACKSTAGE, WICHITA

Hollywood Blondes:        Teenagers 30’s coats, dresses and cloche hats.

Louise:                   Repeat slacks and shirt.  Add sweater.  Prop:  jeweled g-string (not provided by Costume World)

Rose:                     30’s dress, coat and hat.  Can repeat I-8

Mazeppa

Burlesque Performer:       Nude leotard with gladiator skirt and breast-plate.  Gladiator

Helmet, shield.

Tessie Tura

Burlesque Performer:       Gaudy tinseled brief panties and bra, decorated with oversize

Butterflies, wings on back, attached to wrist.  Long sheer weighted

Drape attached to center of panties.  Butterfly headpiece.

Electra:

Burlesque Performer:       Brief and gaudy two piece costume.  Electric to be

wired by your prop department to light.
